Between the last day of October and the first 2 days of November it is a period of time when all over the world are celebrations and events dedicated to remembering the dead. One of these famous celebrations is Halloween, a time to remember the dead ones, nowadays including many activities like theme parties, trick – or – treat, carving pumpkins or decorating the places in a very scary way.

In Romania, Halloween is a relative new one, related to the All Saints Day, Day of the Dead and Saint Andrew Celebration, the last one being the traditional night when all the spirits are considered to be free.

Our Halloween starts from Bucharest. From the capital, we are going to the Snagov Monastery, founded by Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula. The story says that Dracula’s body was buried inside of this monastery, after a battle against the Turks.

From Bucharest we travel to a wonderful fortress, Poenari, famous because it offered protection to Vlad the Impaler and nowadays, because of its location, on the top of a hill, the panoramic view over the Arges Valley being startling.

From here, our next stop is Sibiu, a city strategically positioned at the crossing of important medieval roads in the medieval times, built by the Saxons.

We leave Sibiu, following the story written by Bram Stoker, in the Borgo Pass, where it was built a hotel standing on the top of Tihuta Pass, in a very picturesque area. We leave the Dracula lands to discover the Heart of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca, a city with a history of almost 2 millenniums, second in state today after Bucarest.

Next to Cluj, we go to Turda, to visit the local salt mine, renovated in the last years, which was ranked among the 25 hidden gems around the world that are worth the trek. Another very important Romanian prince was Michael the Brave, who united the 3 regions of modern Romania in 1600. We visit his tomb a couple of kilometers from the salt mine.

After Turda, we are heading to Sighisoara, the birthplace of Dracula, where we have a Halloween Party and a lot of surprises. From Sighisoara, we travel to Brasov, in the center of Romania, the biggest city inside of the Carpathian Arc, where we discover the main square with its edifices. Our next stop is Dracula’s castle, Bran and one of the royal residences of Romanian royal family, the legend says that it has a mystical maze, a place where the spirits are haunting free during the Day of all dead.

Our last stop is the Peles Castle in Sinaia, a Neo gothic castle built for the royal family. After Sinaia, we are heading to Bucarest to depart.

The Halloween tour is over, but the memories about the frightened nights, bloody prince and amazing monuments are still in our minds.
