We continue our journey visiting the tomb of Michael The Brave which was the ruler of the Romanian Country, the first unifier of the three countries that formed Romania: Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldova. The International context was unfavorable for Michael. The neighboring powers saw in his political ambitions, a contradiction with their own dominant interests. Habsburgs saw their plans threatened, Poland did not want losing control of Moldavia and the Ottoman Empire did not accept the idea of quitting the Wallachia.
Michael allied with the Imperial General Gheorghe Basta and defeated Habsburgs at Guraslau in Transylvania. In these conditions, is made a plotting for removal of the Romanian ruler. Immediately after Michael’s victory, Rudolf ordered his assassination and Michael the Brave is killed by his ally Gheorghe Basta -Habsburg general at August 9, 1601 and buried in Turda.
As we continue this cultural-historic tour, our next stop is Rimetea village which is situated in Alba County. Due to its uniqueness, in 1996, the village was included into a project conducted by Transylvania Trust Foundation. They focused on rehabilitation of the old village structures and restored 160 traditional houses. Tourists are warmly welcomed in the numerous guesthouses with traditional local food and a large variety of out-door activities. Near Rimetea village, there are many natural attractions, such as beautiful green meadows, narrow gorges, caves and not forget to mention the landmark of Rimetea, Szekler’s Stone which is a steep and rather isolated peak. Also, it worth visiting one of the most important medieval fortresses of Transylvania, Coltesti, which is located in the close vicinity.
We cannot miss The Alba Carolina fortress which was built between 1714-1738 and it is considered to be the most representative baroque, Vauban-type star fortress in Romania. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the fortress served as the military headquarters of Transylvania and also as a general armament repository. It was once one of the most powerful citadels in southeastern Europe, and served in the line of defense meant to keep out Turkish enemies from Central Europe. The fortress was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Morandi Visconti, who was supervised of the general Stefan de Steinville. It is outstanding both for its original elements and for the beauty of its gates decorated with statues and reliefs, unique in European military architecture.
